Chelsea FC Take On Arsenal: 5 Previous Meetings
Chelsea 6-0 Arsenal, 22nd March 2014
Chelsea recorded their biggest win over Arsenal in March 2014 in a match that had it all. The hosts scored twice in the first seven minutes, thanks to goals from Samuel Eto’o and Andre Schurrle. Chelsea then won a penalty in the 17th minute after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain used his hand to divert the ball away from goal. However, referee Andre Marriner sent off Kieran Gibbs instead, appearing to mix up the identities of the two players.
With Arsenal down to 10 men, Hazard converted the penalty before Oscar scored twice and Mohamed Salah rounded off the scoring, as Chelsea hit Arsenal for six. It was simple domination and highly embarrassing for the Gunners. Memories of their 8-2 defeat at the hands of Manchester United a few years previous came flooding back as Arsenal had no answer.
Perhaps the best thing, though, is the fact that the meeting marked Wenger’s 1000th match in charge of Arsenal. While he was being celebrated in the lead up to the match, the result certainly put a dampener of the occasion from an Arsenal perspective. We can be sure, though, that Jose Mourinho loved every minute.
