Chelsea 2-1 Arsenal, 20th January 2013

Chelsea held on against Arsenal to win their first home game of 2013 after two losses and a draw to start the calendar year.

The Blues raced into a 2-0 lead, with goals from Juan Mata and Frank Lampard in the pouring rain. The latter would convert a penalty as both goals were scored in the first twenty minutes of the contest.

Theo Walcott scored early in the second half to make it a nervy finish at Stamford Bridge, as Chelsea fans gave interim manager Rafa Benitez rare applause at the final whistle. It was another lesson in counter-attacking football from Chelsea, who looked like the away side for much of the second period, but took all three points anyway.

Rafa would lead the team to the FA and League Cup semi-finals in that campaign, as well as to the Europa League final where they would defeat Benfica 2-1. Jose Mourinho was installed in the ensuing summer.
