Chelsea FC Hero Fernando Torres Scores For Atletico Madrid – WATCH

Fernando Torres got on the scoresheet for Atletico Madrid last night as they defeated Eibar 2-0

Ex-Chelsea FC striker Fernando Torres bagged a goal for Atletico Madrid as they continued their good start to the season with a 2-0 win over Eibar.

The Spaniard finished off a neat move by Atletico with a delightful dink over Eibar goalkeeper Asier Riesgo to seal the deal for Diego Simeone’s side. Youngster Oliver Torres fed quasi-new signing Angel Correa who drove towards the box. The more well-known Torres then made a darting run allowing Correa to slip him in.

The Eibar centre-back had tracked Fernando’s run while Riesgo also came off his line but in vintage Torres style he poked the ball over the diving keeper from an ever-tightening angle. By the way, when I say vintage I’m referring to his Liverpool days.

The roles were reversed earlier in the contest when Torres played the ball to Correa who opened the scoring. Chasing the ball down the left flank, a nice pass on the swivel preceded a tricky feint from the Argentine, who finished it off.

This marks Torres’s second goal in the La Liga campaign thus far. The Atletico academy product scored last weekend against Barcelona with a great finish one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

Torres joined Chelsea for £50million in 2011 and proceeded to be absolutely awful given his price tag. He had some comical misses and became the butt of jokes for fans of any Premier League team. Having said that, he played a key part in one of Chelsea’s most memorable nights.

With John Terry sent off, the Blues somehow managed to pull back a two-goal Barcelona lead in the second leg of a 2011/12 Champions League semifinal to draw the game 2-2 and knock the Catalans out of the competition 3-2 on aggregate.

It was a truly remarkable night in which Chelsea camped in the box and miraculously survived the incessant onslaught from Lionel Messi and friends.

However, the most memorable moment on the night (and arguably in Chelsea’s recent history) began when the Blues cleared the ball upfield in stoppage time. With Barcelona desperate for a goal, Torres was on his own on the half-way line, nothing between him and the goalkeeper. And he just picked the ball up and ran.

He took it around a flailing Victor Valdes and sealed Chelsea’s place in the Champions League final while Gary Neville lost his sh*t on commentary. The rest is history.

Having said that, let’s not beat around the bush. He was terrible at Stamford Bridge. He subsequently spent a bit of time at AC Milan before returning to the club that he grew up with and captained on a two year loan. The deal ends this season but if he continues at his current rate, there is no doubt that Diego Simeone will want to make his former teammate a permanent part of his team as his career reaches its twilight.

Despite the complete waste of money that he was, I’m still pleased to see him enjoying his football again.
