Chelsea FC Loan Watch: See Lucas Piazon’s Goal For Reading FC

Chelsea FC loanee Lucas Piazon got on the scoresheet for Reading this weekend.

The forward was sent to the Madejski Stadium at the end of August to spend the season with Sky Bet Championship outfit Reading FC. Piazon finally got off the mark in terms of goals by contributing to the club’s 2-1 victory away at Burnley.

The Brazilian finished off a neat Reading team move to double the Royals’ lead at Turf Moor. With Burnley camped on the edge of their box, Piazon received the ball from the side’s other goalscorer Nick Blackman. He then turned out and fed the ball into Garath McCleary who subsequently made use of a marauding Chris Gunter down the right flank.

Gunter nailed the ball across the box with a first time cross only for Piazon to find himself unmarked around the penalty spot. The Chelsea man applied a calm right-footed finish into the bottom corner to give Reading a two-goal lead after just nine minutes.

Sean Dyche’s Clarets would pull one back in the 67th minute, but the Royals would hang on to the 2-1 win to snap Burnley’s five-game unbeaten run.

Reading are in fact managed by Jose Mourinho’s former right-hand-man, Steve Clarke. The former Blues coach has taken his Reading side to 3rd spot in the Championship and is weighing up a very realistic promotion bid.

With regard to Piazon, meanwhile, the venture just north of London is his fourth loan spell since arriving at Stamford Bridge in 2011. Previous loans have been met with mixed levels of success. A season spent at Vitesse two years ago saw the youngster score 11 goals in 29 Eredivisie game but his stint with Eintracht Frankfurt last season was more useful than spectacular.

The forward has always been touted as a player with great potential and hopefully this spell with Clarke will really see him fulfill it. At the age of 21, his chances of becoming an established star for a top team are diminishing and consequently he will know that this is the most important year in his career thus far.

With his last two (out of four) appearances coming as a starter, Clarke evidently sees him as a key piece of the promotion puzzle and Piazon should recognise this. He has been given a somewhat rare opportunity to stay in England (and almost in London too) so the Brazilian will be expected to make the most of the convenience.

Playing with a decent club and in a challenging and competitive league, a good season here will certainly shoot his stock price through the roof, whether that be in the minds of Chelsea or rival teams.

I personally am looking forward to tracking his development throughout the campaign.
