Didier Drogba Phoned Kurt Zouma After Diego Costa Blunder

Kurt Zouma recently found out how vicious the British press can be. Didier Drogba was one of the first people to offer him some wise words after the Diego Costa comments.

Chelsea FC welcomed Arsenal to Stamford Bridge last weekend in a crunch Premier League clash. Meetings between the two are always highly-charged affairs, but last Saturday’s fixture carried more weight. Chelsea were looking to cement their resurgence while Arsenal were still on the look out for credibility.

The Blues would come away as 2-0 victors after Diego Costa employed some classic Costa underhand tactics to get Arsenal defender Gabriel Paulista sent off. While the Blues lost any momentum with a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United this weekend, the victory felt huge at the time.

In the aftermath, Zouma was asked about Costa’s questionable actions and failed to guard his comments appropriately as he called the striker a ‘cheat’. Despite English being the Frenchman’s second language, the British press were merciless and forced the defender into retreat. Didier Drogba, meanwhile, was one of the first people to offer some words of reassurance.

"Didier told me something like this happened to him and just to forget it and get on with my football. He understood what I tried to say but the most important thing is to move on."

The Ivorian also fell foul of the British media when he openly stated that ‘sometimes I dive, sometimes I stand’. He evidently did not mean to say the word ‘dive’ because even if you did, why would you say it? The papers obviously slaughtered him and Drogba learnt a valuable lesson.

Now, Zouma has trodden a similar path. The best thing about this is the fact that Chelsea greats like Drogba are still keeping in touch with the club and in particular are willing to impart wisdom onto the squad’s younger members.

The striker is currently seeing out his career in the MLS after joining the Montreal Impact last month. It is safe to say that he is tearing it up as well. Drogba has scored a whopping seven goals in five starts for the Canadian outfit, with two goals coming earlier today in a 2-0 victory over DC United.

At 37 years of age, it is almost certain that this will be his last venture as an active player but he sure is determined to go out with a bang. While he looked off the pace in his one-season stint at Chelsea last term, he evidently has more than it takes to dominate the still-growing MLS and will be a big part of the Impact’s push for the final play-off spot.

It has been touted that a coaching opportunity at Stamford Bridge will make itself available once he does call time on his career. Based on Zouma’s comments, Chelsea should pull out all the stops to make sure that he accepts it.
