It took Chelsea FC men’s team 50 years to win the top league in English football.
Last year Chelsea Ladies FC were in a similar position going into the final match of the season, an away draw or win and they were champions.
As the records show they lost that afternoon 2-1 to Manchester City Women and that allowed Liverpool Ladies FC to clinch a 2nd successive title with a better goal difference of +2 after their 3-0 home win over Bristol Academy Women.
So no pressure then for our ladies in Blue!
This year however the Ladies of Chelsea FC have already created history winning their 1st major piece of silverware, the Women’s FA Cup by beating Notts County Ladies FC 1-0 at Wembley. 3 points on Sunday will give them the domestic double, a feat only achieved once before, by Arsenal Ladies FC in the inaugural FAWSL 2011 season.
This year the club, the management team, the players are all a year wiser, have a year’s worth more experience and as Emma Hayes (Chelsea Ladies FC manager) tweeted they are “born ready”.
Chelsea FC Ladies have led from the front throughout the 13 game season so far losing only 2 matches, both in July where understandably the focus of the player’s attention may have been the upcoming historical 1st ever FA Cup final at Wembley. One of those defeats was away to Sunday’s opponents, a resounding 0-4 reverse at Sunderland, match report here.
Since the FA Cup Final win however the ladies have returned to form with the following 4 league fixtures returning 4 wins, 12 goals scored with only 1 goal conceded.
Last week’s 4-0 win away at Liverpool Ladies FC, the defending champions (match report here) was as impressive as the scoreline suggested, not just because of the manner of the 3 points, but also because the potentially all important goal difference was maintained in Chelsea FC Ladies favour despite their nearest challengers Manchester City Women’s FC winning 6-1 at Bristol Academy Women’s FC earlier in the day.
