Chelsea FC Owner Roman Abramovich Backs Jose Mourinho In Statement
This is all just a bizarre situation really.
Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich has broken his silence with regard to the troubles engulfing Stamford Bridge. With the club languishing dangerously above the relegation zone in 16th place, Chelsea are in a crisis that seems to have no end at this point in time. The Russian, though, has come out to declare his confidence in Jose Mourinho.
Yesterday afternoon, the club put out a statement on their website to reaffirm their commitment to Mourinho’s long-term project at Stamford Bridge.
"The club wants to make it clear that Jose continues to have our full support. As Jose has said himself, results have not been good enough and the team’s performances must improve. However, we believe that we have the right manager to turn this season around and that he has the squad with which to do it."
That is the full length of the statement. Nevertheless, the fact that the Chelsea brass have issued one underlines the dire state that the club finds itself in. The Blues have amassed a grand total of eight points from eight Premier League games but, more worryingly, do not look like improving any time soon.
While Chelsea fans have been somewhat patient thus far this season, the first signs of aggravation on behalf of the die-hard fans were shown at the weekend. As the Blues failed to protect a one goal lead to lose the fixture with Southampton 3-1, fans in attendance began to voice their concerns. The removal of goalscorer Willian and Nemanja Matic (who had only been subbed on a half time) were greeted with a smattering of jeers from a dumbstruck crowd.
Mourinho’s authority is rarely questioned, and certainly not by the Stamford Bridge faithful, but as his team limped to another defeat with another hopeless and disinterested display, Chelsea fans were well within their rights to be irritated.

Having said that, there are few true Blues supporters who will be calling for Mourinho’s head and this vote of confidence from the board will put all concerned at ease. Some people will undoubtedly bring up the all too valid sentiment that managers who have been backed by the board have gone on to be sacked mere days later, but Chelsea have rarely been in such a situation and thus this should be regarded as more genuine.
When Mourinho returned to the club just over two years ago, he harped on about doing something that he had never done before and remaining with a team for the long haul. He has continued to show unwithering commitment to the Blues and has reiterated his love and passion for Chelsea FC on numerous occasions. This is probably the most difficult time in his professional career but everyone must rally around the boss and keep the faith.
Mourinho is simply too good a tactician to not turn this around. That may not necessarily mean silverware in this season, but in the next campaign and perhaps a decade to come.
