The Football Association has continued its theme of using fines against Chelsea FC to line its prodigious pockets. The latest action was taken against Chelsea and Arsenal football club who were fined £40k and £30k respectively after the incident involving Diego Costa and Gabriel Paulista.

This fine is the standard “failing to control players” one that comes about every time a scuffle breaks out on the pitch and is usually levied a few weeks after so the FA can have time to review the incident. This is on top of suspending Diego Costa for three matches for violent conduct so it is adding a very minute insult to the injury of Chelsea losing its best striker for three important matches.

Chelsea’s record without Costa was one win, a draw, and a decisive loss against Southampton at Stamford Bridge though how much Costa could have done to prevent that is debatable unless he can suddenly play centerback. That loss also had further consequences as Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho spoke after the game how referees seem to be scared of awarding penalties to the Blues.

This is piggybacking on his comments from last season of the campaign against Chelsea that he felt kept referees from making the correct decisions in the game. The ref in question had himself a horror show performance as he failed to award Southampton one clear penalty, one debatable one, and an obvious one for Radamel Falcao.

The issue here is not that the FA is doling out fines to members of Chelsea Football Club, the issue is a complete and utter lack of consistency on their part. Diego Costa gets suspended for striking Laurent Koscielny in the face with his hand but Raheem Sterling does the same the year before and escapes unpunished. Costa gets suspended for a debatable “stamp” on Emre Can but Sergio Aguero gets away with a two-footed stomp on David Luiz.

In the last two Premier League meetings with Arsenal there have been incidents. Last season Jose Mourinho was accosted by Arsene Wenger in his own technical area and the Frenchman was not even given a fine. Then Wenger spoke on the Costa-Gabriel incident and said blatantly that the referees should target Costa which does not sound like the sort of thing a manager should be allowed to say but he still escapes unpunished.

Many football fans poke fun at Chelsea FC supporters for taking these FA fines and suspensions personally and but there is something that they fail to understand. It is not the fines and suspensions that they have a problem with, it is the fact that there is no consistency in these punishments and that some managers and players seem to be untouchable in the eyes of the Football Association.
