Chelsea FC vs Aston Villa: Post-Match Reflections
Gold In The Midst Of Rubbles
The slump in Chelsea’s form and that of last season’s player of the year, Eden Hazard, has been the most surprising and disappointing negative of the season so far. The performances of Cesc Fabregas, Nemanja Matic, John Terry and Ivanovic have been just as disappointing, although not surprising considering how they all struggled during the tail end of last season.
But even in the midst of Chelsea’s struggles, some unexpected heroes have emerged. Willian and Ramires have been the Blues’ in-form players in recent games, and both players were largely instrumental in helping the club secure the 3 points on Saturday. Chelsea FC’s TV and radio commentator, Clive Walker, highlighted the performances of both players with good reason.

Willian may not have continued his recent goal-scoring form for both club and country, but he created a game-high four chances, one of which set-up Diego Costa’s goal. He also completed the most passes and won the most number of fouls of any Chelsea player. His industry was largely responsible for the first goal as his characteristic high pressing ensured that he was on hand to take advantage of Brad Guzan’s misplaced pass.
He could have also set-up another goal after he again won possession off a Villa defender and played Costa through on goal, but the Spaniard was unable to connect with the pass. He then played an exquisite through ball to Fabregas, who managed to miss the target when scoring would have been easier.
Ramires was also at his inspired tackling best, winning more tackles than anyone else on the pitch bar Azpilicueta (who also made 6 tackles). The 28-year-old Brazilian also made more ball recoveries than everyone except Fabregas. He played a huge role in the Blues’ second goal, winning the ball in midfield with another well-timed tackle and laying the ball off to Fabregas, who found Costa with a lofted through ball.
While his reckless streak was still evident during the game (he committed the most fouls of any Chelsea player on the pitch), his energy, stamina and workrate have been crucial for the Blues during this difficult period and long may it continue.
