So before the ridicule starts, allow me to explain a couple of things that would need to change in the background, and also the roles players would play first!

I have used our existing players because this isn’t a blueprint for the future, it’s a plan for now with the transfer window closed until January.

If it looks like I’ve split the team into two instead of having a combined unit, it’s because I have!

The defensive unit needs to play as a single entity without any attacking responsibilities, and vice versa, the attacking unit need to play as a separate unit with no defensive responsibilities to hinder them.

Obviously during games some situations would dictate changes to that, but as a basic template this is where I would start.

My reasons for separating the two units are:

  1. We sign an attacker for his attacking skills, not for how well he defends. The opposite should be applied to defenders.
  2. This may be anti-every modern day way of thinking about how footballers should be, but if an attacker is short of confidence what better way of rebuilding his confidence than by letting him primarily concentrate on what he knows he does best.

Off the pitch is where there would need to be changes for this to work however.
