Rumours of Chelsea’s transfer window spree are gathering momentum.

With Chelsea FC’s well-documented struggles, the Blues are likely to be reasonably busy when the winter transfer window opens in January. As Christmas ads start to rear their heads, transfer rumours are joining them with Chelsea now linked with a move to sign Gonzalo Higuain from Napoli.

According to the Daily Mirror, the Argentine front man is high on the list of priorities for the Stamford Bridge officials as they desperately try to right this sinking ship.

Chelsea have been floundering so far this season despite winning both the Premier League and Capital One Cup last term. They have lost seven out of their 12 Premier League games while they have also been knocked out of the League Cup by Stoke City.

The defence has been at the heart of many of the club’s problems, but the Blues haven’t looked threatening going forward either. With just 16 goals scored, Chelsea barely make the top half if the table were to be sorted that way.

However, more concerningly, the club are third in terms of shots per game, with an average of just under 15 attempts in each Premier League match.

This pair of stats illustrates the extent to which the club’s attacking woes have been adding to the misery. Last Saturday’s game against Stoke was a prime example, with Chelsea simply unable to finish off any of their reasonably easy chances.

Diego Costa was the star striker last season, hitting the back of the net at will (when not succumbing to injuries). His aggressive and physical game enabled him to get under the skin of the opposition, while he would take any opportunity to score with clinical precision.

This season, though, he has been more concerned with starting fights and his two goals in 10 league games reflect that.

While Chelsea may be interested in acquiring Higuain in January, this apparently may be a very hard deal to bilaterally agree upon.

"Jose Mourinho retains the support of the Chelsea hierarchy and Napoli’s Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain is high on his wish list of potential long term targets – but realistically may only be available in the summer."

Radamel Falcao was brought in over the summer but has failed to show any improvement on his abysmal campaign at Manchester United. He has also been struck by several minor injuries, which certainly doesn’t help.

Loic Remy, meanwhile, has also failed to step up to the plate consistently, which is disappointing given his impressive outings throughout last season.

Whether Higuain is a realistic January target or not, hopefully the surfacing of such rumours will spark the Blues frontline into action once domestic football resumes in two weeks.
