Chelsea FC Technical Director’s Job In Jeopardy

Reports from several UK newspapers, including The Independent, suggest that Chelsea FC technical director Michael Emenalo may be the scapegoat for the club’s poor start to the season. Many fans and pundits have blamed the Blues’ inability to make a splash in the transfer market for their failings this season and Emenalo is the target of such criticism.

In football a stagnant squad is one that often gets left behind and despite winning the Premier League just six months ago the Blues did little to build on and improve the squad. During the summer transfer window Chelsea FC made their pursuit of players such as John Stones public and of course failed to sign him as Everton held firm. The embarrassment of being constantly rebuffed by Everton despite placing several big-money bids left a poor taste in the mouths of many Chelsea supporters.

Paul Pogba was also a supposed target for the club but there was no activity on that end as he stayed put at Juventus while being linked to a future move to FC Barcelona. Instead of Stones and Pogba, Chelsea ended up with Pedro and Papy Djilobodji so the frustration is understandable.

Emenalo was highly praised in recent years for several high-profile moves including bringing in Eden Hazard, Oscar, Diego Costa, and Cesc Fabregas. He was also credited with getting top dollar for players such as David Luiz, Romelu Lukaku, and Juan Mata to refill Chelsea’s transfer coffers. Despite a series of successful moves in the transfer market, Emenalo is becoming the scapegoat for several failed ones.

Names like Juan Cuadrado, Mohamed Salah, Filipe Luis, and Radamel Falcao are being laid at the feet of Emenalo and are surely haunting him in his sleep as his position at the club has come under fire. Failures to sign potential world class players, including ones who nearly begged to be signed like Douglas Costa, are also being pinned on the Nigerian. Signing players is not a one-man job but rather than firing Jose Mourinho and angering the legions of fans who support him, the club may terminate Emenalo instead.

This screams of a situation where the club feels they must do something to appease the fans and Emenalo is being unfairly targeted. He may have made some poor choices in the transfer market but as we do not truly know who is pulling the strings for the club it may be unfair to blame him for the club’s failures on the pitch. We also do not know for sure if we can give him the credit for the shrewd moves of bringing in Hazard and other big-time players but that is the nature of the position he is in.

He will be blamed for the club’s failures and praised for its successes regardless of how much he actually had to do with them. It would be a shame if Emenalo is unfairly scapegoated by Chelsea FC as he has been part of a great period at the club wherein they won two European trophies and several domestic ones but something needs to change at the club. The changes should probably be taking place on the field in the form of switching up the starting eleven but a move at the top may shake things up and remind everyone that their place at the club is not guaranteed.
