It’s Mission Impossible for Jose Mourinho and Chelsea FC.
The Blues scrapped their way to a 1-0 victory over Norwich City yesterday afternoon as domestic football returned for the festive season. With seven defeats in the previous 12 Premier League games, three points was beyond a necessity for the West Londoners.
Speaking to the press after the match, the boss failed to get carried away with a now rare victory. While some Chelsea fans may be dreaming of a miraculous recovery that will see the club successfully defend their Premier League crown, Mourinho made sure to give them a reality check.
"Fourth position for me is not an impossible mission. If you ask me about winning the the title, I would say impossible mission. Maybe Tom Cruise can do it but it’s complicated."

He’s not wrong. Chelsea have only gained one point on first position after yesterday’s win with the gap to the summit now worth 14 points.
The maximum points that the Blues can accrue is 89, but that would require going on a mammoth 25-game winning streak. Reaching 80 points would be an incredible effort given their current position so 89 is very much Mission Impossible.
The issue for Mourinho and Chelsea is that the Premier League is far too competitive to go on a dominant run. Whether that be due to a lack of quality is a debate that I will leave for another day, but with about 30% of the club’s fixtures carrying the potential of defeat a push for the top four is all that fans can hope for.
Furthermore, with the likes of West Ham United and Leicester City (top of the league – congratulations Claudio) proving that they can take it to the big boys, there are very few guaranteed victories in the Premier League.

*Now, this is the part of the article where I write something witty that ties in Tom Cruise, Mission Impossible and Chelsea. However, having seen about half of one of the films, I am in no position to do so. Please feel free to insert your own paragraph now.*
While Cruise may fancy himself at the helm of the Blues (I presume you mentioned something about that), Mourinho will undoubtedly be quick to leave the jokes behind. Chelsea have another eight fixtures before 2016 arrives and more immediately, the club have a long trip to Israel on Tuesday.
Despite some security concerns, Chelsea’s Champions League clash with Maccabi Tel-Aviv is still scheduled to go ahead. The squad will be looking to be efficient with a performance that could secure their progression to the Round of 16.
