Chelsea FC Defeat Norwich City: Key Takeaways
…And Disappointing Finishing
Like I said earlier, the 1-0 score line did little justice to the Blues performance on Saturday. They would have scored at least five goals if they had not contrived to forget their shooting boots in the dressing room. Diego Costa alone should have bagged a hat trick as he was provided with three clear cut chances, converting only one.
Nemanja Matic, meanwhile, managed to waltz through the defence, as he is sometimes prone to do, only to direct his attempt straight at the goalkeeper when the net was at his mercy.
Cesc Fabregas also managed to sky a slightly more difficult chance inside the box from a Pedro cut-back (which incidentally was the ex-Barca player’s only positive contribution during the game). Terry and Kurt Zouma both failed to make proper contact with the ball from Willian’s corner kicks after managing to escape their markers at the near post, and the latter again struck the woodwork from another brilliant Willian free kick.
Unfortunately, this has become a frequent theme in the Blues last few games: create much, convert few! The same issues occurred in both the penalty shoot-out defeat in the Capital One Cup and the 1-0 league defeat against Stoke City as well as the 2-1 Champions League victory over Dynamo Kyiv. And it is one of the key reasons for the Blues current struggles.
