Chelsea FC are targeting West Bromwich Albion’s (WBA) Saido Berahino this January.

The Blues are slated to make a number of moves when the winter transfer window opens in January and the latest player that they have been linked with is West Brom’s Saido Berahino.

Chelsea have been struggling so far in this campaign and currently find themselves in 15th position in the Premier League table. The frailties at the back have been well-documented, but problems with sticking the damn spherical thing in the back of the net have not helped either.

Consequently, many well-informed journalists have been claiming that Jose Mourinho will be in the market for both defenders and forwards in January. This time it is ESPNFC who reports the Berahino story, stating that Chelsea are in place to fight off interest from both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United for the striker’s signature.

"Chelsea are confident of beating several of their Premier League rivals to the signing of Saido Berahino if West Bromwich Albion decide to sell him in January."

The English forward was subject to much speculation linking him with a move away from The Hawthornes over the summer. It even reached a point at which Berahino claimed that he would refuse to play for the Baggies as a result of perceived incompetence on the club’s part.

He has since made amends and has featured regularly for Tony Pulis’ side. Eleven Premier League appearances may have only yielded three goals so far but his reputation was forged last season. Twenty goals in 36 competitive appearances for West Brom established Berahino as one of the brightest prospects in English football.

Consequently, the Blues are looking to secure his services to compensate for their own faltering front line.

Mourinho has previously stated that he will not be asking for any new players in the winter transfer window, but several events may conspire to change his mind.

Radamel Falcao is reportedly on the verge of terminating his loan deal and such a development would justify the arrival of the West Brom man. Furthermore, with people like Michael Emenalo essentially running the transfer affairs, the Blues brass may take the executive decision to bring him in.

While many fans may be pleased by this news, some may be less excited. Chelsea currently have a prodigious talent in Patrick Bamford wasting away on loan at Crystal Palace and there are growing calls for him to be recalled. Alan Pardew is not affording him sufficient time so there is probably more benefit in him being under the guidance of Mourinho and the Blues senior players.
