Chelsea FC are looking to sign Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane in the summer.

As European football inches closer to the opening of the winter transfer window, transfer rumours are starting to rear their head again. Chelsea’s poor campaign mean that they are subject to much speculation, with this latest report claiming that the Blues are pursuing Harry Kane.

The Daily Mail carries the story, but states that Kane is being targeted as a summer arrival instead of a January one.

"Chelsea are prepared to launch a full-scale attempt to land England hotshot Harry Kane next summer…Stamford Bridge scouts will use Sunday’s clash against Spurs to add to their dossier of the striker."

Kane was prolific last season, raising hopes of a next great English striker. He scored 21 goals for Spurs in 28 Premier League starts as he burst on the scene. This campaign is shaping up to be equally as productive, with the English international having hit the back of the net eight times already.

Chelsea’s defensive struggles have been well-documented, but problems in attack are also rife. The strikeforce of Diego Costa, Loic Remy and Radamel Falcao have failed to step up as a unit and thus the backline frailties have been left widely exposed.

With Falcao reportedly on the verge of terminating his loan deal, there will certainly be space in the squad for a Harry Kane. Furthermore, Remy’s future at Stamford Bridge is also doubtful given that Mourinho has failed to afford him more playing time.

Even Diego Costa has been linked with a move back to Atletico Madrid, leaving behind the prospect of a wholly different frontline taking the field next season.

While Chelsea fans may be excited by this deal, there will undoubtedly be many cynics out there. There always seems to be a tendency in England to overhype any English player who is above-average at football. This then leads to a big-money move after which the supposed star is found out and crumbles.

Having said that, Kane does look like the real deal. Sentiments of a one-season wonder were touted at the beginning of this campaign and only grew as he struggled to get off the mark. However, he has scored nine goals in his last eight competitive appearances to prove that his quality is no illusion.

It will be interesting to see how much Spurs would require to part ways with Kane. With the striker contracted at White Hart Lane until 2020, a fee nearing the £20 million mark would seem like a reasonable estimate for a successful bid.
