Chelsea FC have rewarded Gary Cahill with a new contract extension
Chelsea FC fans have debated for some time whether or not Gary Cahill was in the long term plans of the club. Today, they received the answer to that question. The club announced today that the England defender has signed a new four year contract to stay at the club until 2019.
Cahill narrowly avoided the Chelsea over-30 contract rule where they only give one year extensions to players in their 30s by a mere two weeks. The club has applied the rule to legends such as Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole in the past.
The former Bolton Wanderers centerback joined the Blues in January 2012 and was seen as little more than a depth signing. He was cheap at around £7m, is English, and was already an experienced Premier League defender at the time. His future in the team looked bright, but only as a backup to John Terry and fellow Chelsea newbie David Luiz.

Things did not quite work out that way but they have gone far better than expected for Cahill. That season he won the Champions League and FA Cup and has since put together an impressive resume of silverware with the Blues.
He has become vice-captain of the Three Lions and has been made the heir apparent to Terry at both the club and international level. Cahill is also now the club’s only England representative at the senior level although he may be joined by the next generation of Chelsea youngsters in the near future.
Cahill spoke to the club’s official site about the deal and said, “I’m really pleased to commit my future to Chelsea and it’s great the club has put their faith in me. I have achieved a lot here and I hope I can keep on learning, helping the team and lifting trophies over the next four years.”

Despite the dreary start to the 2015-16 season for the Blues, the future is bright at the club with players like Gary Cahill to bridge the gap between old legends and dynamic youngsters.
