Chelsea FC: I Think Eden Hazard Is Happy, Says Brother

Eden Hazard’s brother, Thorgan Hazard, has stated that his brother is not unsettled at Chelsea FC.

The Blues superstar has been in indifferent form throughout this campaign and thus the inevitable speculation linking him with a Stamford Bridge exit have surfaced. However, his football playing brother has claimed that such talk is nonsense.

Speaking to Omnisport (via Goals.com), Thorgan rubbished rumours regarding a rift between Eden and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

"I think he’s happy but you need to ask him, I can’t answer for him…I know that journalists like it when it’s not going well – they are looking for problems – but I never heard there was a problem between Mourinho and Eden."

English literature students will immediately point to Thorgan’s use of the word ‘think’ as an indication of the contrary being true. Given that the two are indeed brothers (and no bizarre falling out has been reported), you would expect them to be in fairly regular contact.

But enough of the nitpicking, the Borussia Mönchengladbach player is evidently wary of speaking on his brother’s behalf, especially in such a difficult time.

Hazard had a terrible start to the campaign as he failed to adequately follow the starring performances of last season that saw him win multiple Player of the Year awards. He has looked slow and at times frankly disinterested, coasting through games as 90 minutes flies past him.

However, a major caveat to this is that his performances have been no worse than those of any other member of the squad. There are very few Chelsea players who would be able to claim that they have contributed positively during the first three months of the season.

The good news is that the Blues appear to be turning a very gentle, but curved nonetheless, corner. Three straight clean sheets on the back of the international break has allowed Chelsea fans to get a tad more comfortable.

With the Premier League crown all but written off, Mourinho’s goal is to finish in the top four. While this will still require a tremendous effort, harnessing the minor optimism currently brewing could result in a decent run through the festive period. The top tier of English football is as unpredictable as ever and thus a string of wins could fire the Blues up the table.

If Chelsea are to be playing in the Champions League next season, it will undoubtedly coincide with a return to form for Hazard. The Belgian has shown signs of life in recent weeks, but both the player and the team seem fragile enough that a poor result, or even decision, will send them plummeting down to earth.

Cautious optimism, that is all that we can afford.
