Chelsea FC can still finish in the top four, insist boss Jose Mourinho.

The Blues currently find themselves down in 14th position, with last weekend’s 1-0 loss at home to Bournemouth scuppering any momentum that the previous weeks had built. The games don’t any easier either, with a trip to Premier League leaders Leicester City next for the West Londoners.

However, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has stated that his side still have a chance of finishing in the top four and claiming that all-important Champions League spot. Given the competitive nature of the league, a decent run can work wonders.

"If we can get a run of four or five consecutive victories, because none of the other clubs are doing that, maybe we have a chance to make up the distance and dream of finishing fourth. While mathematically it’s possible we have to try."

With the club’s poor start to the season, targets were rightly adjusted to achieving a top four finish. However, this required a minimal number of slip-ups through to the end of the campaign. Unfortunately, a victory over Norwich City and a well-earned point against Tottenham Hotspur were succeeded by the disappointing Bournemouth loss.

That result leaves Chelsea 14 points off fourth position at the moment and with the tough game against the Foxes on Monday, there is no guaranteeing that this gap will close in the near future.

However, such is the competitiveness of the league (or the lack of quality), a string of wins could see the Blues rocketing up towards the promised land. The longest winning streak so far has been five games, achieved by both Arsenal and Manchester City, and there is a genuine feeling that any club in the top 15 could defeat anyone else.

Last season, Manchester United finished fourth with a total of 70 points. If the Blues are to hit this mark, it would require picking up 55 points from their remaining 23 games; essentially 18 or more victories from now on.

In the campaign before that, Arsenal finished fourth with 79 points. Hence the challenge facing the Blues is huge.

Nevertheless, there are thoughts that the league title will be won with the fewest points possible and thus this could mean that the final Champions League spot would need that much less as well.

However, if this dream is to live on, then Chelsea have to start putting together Premier League wins sharpish. With the surprisingly comfortable Porto result on Wednesday night, the Blues must channel the positives of that display into Monday night’s show against Claudio Ranieri’s men.

Leicester genuinely look like title contenders and they will be eager to add a victory over the reigning champions to their increasingly impressive resume. It’s going to be tough, to say the least.
