Chelsea FC’s Top 20 Goals Of The Roman Abramovich Era
11. Didier Drogba vs Bolton – 2010/11
This is a simply magnificent strike from one of Chelsea’s greatest players.
Florent Malouda nicked the ball on the near side, in the process bundling it to King Didier’s feet. With the Frenchman’s initial challenge catching Bolton off-guard, Drogba found himself in plenty of space.
After taking a couple of touches to move marginally closer to the goal, the Ivorian unleashed a rocket of a right foot to thunder the ball into the net. Blissfully ignoring the more sensible overlap option offered by an eager Malouda, Drogba instead chose to take on goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen with an unbelievably audacious effort.
The fact that the ball beat the experienced keeper despite essentially going straight down the middle is testament to the power and witchcraft that Drogba applied to the ball. The swerve and dip meant that a spectacular dive was in vain.
This would open the scoring in what would turn out to be a convincing 4-0 victory and would certainly be a strike to remember.
