13. Frank Lampard vs Bayern Munich – 2004/05

In the first season under Jose Mourinho, Chelsea FC made a deep run in the Champions League that should have culminated in a trip to the Final. It ended because of the infamous “ghost goal” against Liverpool but the Blues would not have reached that stage without the help of Frank Lampard in the quarter-finals against Bayern Munich.

Lampard scored three of the Blues’ six goals during the tie, which they won 6-5 on aggregate, and his second in the first leg was perhaps his best ever goal. Claude Makelele sent a deep cross into the Bayern box and Lampard showed tremendous skill by bringing the ball down with his back to goal, swiveling and unleashing a laser past Oliver Kahn with his left leg.

Super Frank scored dozens of screamers for Chelsea from both open play and dead ball situations but this goal showed his world-class skill more than any other.
