Chelsea FC: Jamie Carragher Burns Diego Costa During Leicester Defeat

Jamie Carragher let rip at Diego Costa after the Chelsea FC striker had a go at his teammates.

It was another terrible day of football for the Blues as they fell 2-1 at the feet of Leicester City. Jose Mourinho’s men were simply not upto the required standard yet again and Claudio Ranieri’s table-topping side increased their lead to two points.

During the half-time break, the folks at Sky Sports picked up on an interesting clip showing Diego Costa accuse his teammates of being asleep. Jamie Carragher, warming into his role as chief analyst after Gary Neville’s departure, essentially killed Diego Costa in one phrase. Check it out for yourself.

And there is no-one complaining about that comment. While it is encouraging to see Chelsea players trying to motivate and egg on each other, Costa’s actions were rich to say the least.

Costa has indeed been asleep for the entirety of the campaign so far and his somehwat flagrant gesturing towards the Blues defence bordered on the petulant.

The Spanish international was again awful this evening as he continued to look like an amateur. On the occasions that he made the right runs, he failed to control the ball or dribble effectively. When he did get the ball under his control, it was in positions far from where he should have been.

This may appear as scapegoating given that the whole of the team were equally as bad, but the fact that he was criticising his teammates justifies this.

The Chelsea defence has been one of the few areas of the pitch in which improvements have been witnessed. Since the last international break, the Blues have kept clean sheets in five out of the six fixtures played before this evening.

The issue with the club is that they haven’t been scoring and a lot of the blame lies with Costa. The forward has looked aimless and sometimes disinterested. He has larked about seemingly more concerned with starting a fight rather than providing his teammates with an option.

After the bib-throwing incident at White Hart Lane a few weeks back, his attitude is certainly not helping the cause.

Again, it is worth reiterating that motivating and occasionally having a dig at each other is a great way to ensure that the squad performs well. Having said that, the player dishing out the criticism need to be well-placed to do so.

Frankly, Nemanja Matic, Kurt Zouma and Thibaut Courtois deserve credit for not flipping out at the forward. As Carragher said, the last thing that they need is a player who can’t even carry out his own duties criticising others for failing to fulfil theirs.

This situation is just terrible.
