Raphael Varane – Ajitesh Rasgotra

Much of Chelsea’s problems this season have stemmed from a defence that has been more Swiss cheese than cheddar. Opposition attacks have been able to easily waltz through the back four, leaving the likes of Asmir Begovic (for the most part) exposed and vulnerable.

Fortunately, the Bosnian was kind enough to play out of his skin and save the club some face. Furthermore, in the last month or so the defenders have sorted themselves out. However, depth in defence is still a concern and this group of players are not sustainable in the long term.

The 22-year-old Varane was linked with a move to Stamford Bridge at various points over the summer. However, a deal evidently failed to materialise from this. With Papy Djilobodji the only centre-back recruited by Michael Emenalo, the Chelsea brass may look to rectify this situation for both Guus Hiddink and the future.

Varane possesses fantastic pace and strength and is highly rated within the Real Madrid set-up. The French international has been managed carefully through his formative years and now finds himself as the starting centre-back. Unfortunately, a hamstring issue has kept him out recently but his quality is undisputed nonetheless.

If John Stones is worth mega bucks, than Varane is worth breaking the bank for.
