Chelsea FC’s 50 Greatest Players Of All-Time
27. Gus Poyet: 1997-01
Gus Poyet is not the most beloved figure around Stamford Bridge these days after an unfortunate badge-kissing incident with Tottenham but there was a time when he was incredibly popular at the club.
Poyet arrived from Real Zaragoza in 1997 on a free transfer and went on to become a vital player for Chelsea. Operating from midfield, Poyet scored a fantastic 49 goals in 145 appearances for the Blues. His biggest came in the 1998 UEFA Super Cup victory over Real Madrid but he did his damage in the league as well.
He was seen as surplus to requirements by Claudio Ranieri in 2001 but the four years he spent at the club coincided with a turning of the tide for the Blues as they became regular contenders for titles. Since retiring, he has gone on to a career in management and was the man who ended Jose Mourinho’s lengthy home winning streak in the Premier League in 2014.
