Chelsea FC’s 50 Greatest Players Of All-Time
7. Petr Cech: 2004-15
Petr Cech’s legacy has taken a major hit because of his recent move to Arsenal but it is impossible to argue that he is the greatest keeper to ever play for the club. A look at the Chelsea record books sees Cech’s name featuring all over the place, including the most clean sheets with 220 overall, the most clean sheets in the Premier League with 162, and the most clean sheets in a season with 28.
Cech displaced fellow Chelsea great Carlo Cudicini in 2004 and never looked back. His arrival coincided with the greatest period in club history and his list of trophies and accomplishments is downright incredible.
Much like Didier Drogba, Cech saved one of his best performances in a Chelsea shirt for the biggest stage in the 2012 Champions League Final. The Blues goal was under siege the entire match but Cech kept Bayern Munich at bay for 80+ minutes before finally conceding. The heroics did not end there as he saved Arjen Robben’s penalty in extra time and successively kept out penalties from Ivica Olic and Bastian Schweinsteiger in the shoot-out, paving the way for Drogba’s defining title-winning kick.
Big Pete, as he is known, was one of the key components of the Chelsea spine that featured John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba, helping the Blues win so many titles during his time at Stamford Bridge. It is testament to his services that he has seamlessly moved to Arsenal and to this day still remains a much loved figure at Stamford Bridge.
