Final Thoughts

I am not a huge fan of Mark Clattenburg, especially after his terrible showing in Chelsea’s 3-2 defeat to Manchester United in 2012 when he incorrectly sent Fernando Torres off for simulation while he allowed Javier Hernandez’s goal to stand despite the Mexican being miles offside. And he again gave me cause to dislike him even more after another poor showing against Arsenal on Sunday.

I do not give him any credit for sending Mertesacker off as the decision was pretty clear cut. But the fact that Flamini remained on the pitch despite making 2 studs up challenges against Azpilicueta and Fabregas was very disappointing. And how was Kocielny’s barge into Fabregas in the 18-yard box not a penalty? The French defender clearly did not have any intention of going for the ball and instead went for the man, right in full view of the referee, yet he waved play on!

While it is difficult to say, the Blues have managed to put a bit of a gap between themselves and the relegation zone with Aston Villa, Newcastle, Bournemouth and Norwich failing to secure maximum points in their respective fixtures, especially considering the game on Sunday was one many expected them to lose. They are also yet to lose under Guus Hiddink and long may it continue, especially with the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League just around the corner.
