Chelsea FC will not be managed by Pep Guardiola in 2016, that much is clear

When Chelsea FC announced that they had sacked Jose Mourinho, most supporters assumed that they had some sort of long term vision in mind. The club brought in interim manager Guus Hiddink to right the ship but he made it clear that he would retire soon and was not the long term answer at the position.

It has long been believed that Pep Guardiola was always the manager that Roman Abramovich had envisioned for his club. He had all the qualities that Mourinho did not possess, a non-confrontational style of management, an affinity for bringing up youth players to the first team, and his teams played a more “attractive” style of football.

It was believed that Abramovich had pursued Guardiola and promised him a war chest of transfer funds with which to build the club in his image, something that Mourinho was not afforded. Today it was confirmed that Guardiola had opted for a lighter shade of blue in England and at this point who could blame him?

Manchester City have quickly become one of the powerhouses in English football. They seem to have also found their feet in Europe having qualified to the round of 16 in the Champions League and have massive funds available.

The Sky Blues have a clear vision and direction from the board and are bringing in youth players to an extent. Chelsea FC may have the better academy and better players in the pipeline, but Pep will have much more leeway and backing to work with at City. They do have an aging squad but they have shown a willingness to spend massive funds on players to revitalize the squad.

In an ironic twist, by sacking Mourinho in hopes of bringing in Guardiola, Chelsea have put out the message that they are a club without a true direction. They undermined Mourinho in the transfer market, giving him little to no backing and buying players like Papy Djilobodji instead of John Stones, and treated him with disrespect on his way out.

Like his style or not, Mourinho is the most successful manager in Chelsea FC’s history and he was thrown out like the weekly garbage and Guardiola would surely have taken note of that. City have sacked several managers in recent years but at least there was an air of dignity about it.

Carlo Ancelloti was famously sacked in the tunnel after a match against Everton, while Mourinho was given the boot just six months after winning a domestic double. In missing out on Pep, Chelsea’s board and executives must take a good hard look at what this club could become if they continue on this path.

Guardiola may not have been the savior that Chelsea needed but he would have represented that the club at least had a plan when they sacked Mourinho. Now it appears they will be scrambling to appoint another manager that Abramovich will approve of before all of the good candidates are snatched up or stay at their clubs.

The Chelsea faithful are getting restless and need to see tangible progress and change at the club that seems to be acting in a way that only enrages its supporters.  Appointing a manager, and giving him time and money to build his team, would go a long way towards rebuilding that trust.
