Chelsea FC rejected a £57.7 million bid for midfielder Oscar

Just when you thought that the money and stories coming out of China could not be any more ridiculous, a new one comes out that leaves you with your jaw on the floor. Yesterday it was reported by several news outlets that Chelsea FC rejected a ridiculous bid of £57.7 million for the Brazilian midfielder.

The club in question is Jiangsu Suning, the very same one who paid handsomely for Ramires and recently spent £38 million on Alex Teixeira from Shakhtar Donetsk. The noveau-rich Chinese club is owned by the Suning Commerce Group, a private retail group that has an annual revenue close to $20 billion dollars.

With this sort of financial backing becoming more common across China, we can expect more of these audacious bids for players that are talented but not quite superstars. Ramires and Teixeira fit that bill while Oscar is slowly falling away from the early world-class tag that was placed on him.

The bid seemed like tabloid fodder but it was actually confirmed by Oscar’s agent Giuliano Bertolucci in ESPN Brasil. Bertolucci never confirmed the actual figure but we can imagine that if they were willing to pay £38 million for a player from Shakhtar, an extra £20 million for a more marketable and more well-known Oscar is not out of the question.

The question now remains as to why Chelsea FC would reject that bid. The most obvious is that the player did not want to make the move to China, and who could blame him. Oscar is still a regular in the Brazil national team and is still yet to truly enter his prime, something that he wants to do while still playing for a top club.

Accepting the bid would also send the message that Chelsea FC are the sort of club that can be swayed by a big check, even when it comes to their important players. Oscar is still in the plans for the future of the club and even though it was a hefty sum, it is money that the club already has and Roman Abramovich has no problem spending.

As for whether or not the club should have sold Oscar is another question altogether. The player is no doubt talented, but he is remarkably inconsistent. He cannot be counted on to perform at the top level every match and while his age was once used as an excuse, he is now 24-years-old and should not be having these issues anymore.
