Chelsea FC star Eden Hazard sent Jose Mourinho a text message in order to apologise for the circumstances that resulted in his dismissal.

Jose Mourinho was sacked by Chelsea midway through December after the Blues had fallen again in the Premier League. Their 2-1 loss away against current league leaders Leicester City was the final straw for the Chelsea board which parted ways with the Special One in the following days.

It is safe to say that this decision was not received well by Blues fans. The next game, at home to Sunderland, saw the supporters in open revolt, despite an improved display and a comfortable win. The likes of Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas were specifically targeted by a vocal fanbase which claimed that the duo had played a significant part in pushing Mourinho out of the door.

After picking up numerous accolades as a consequence of his performances last season, Eden Hazard had seemingly fallen off a cliff. Speaking to The Guardian, the Belgian recognises how his poor form was a factor in the club’s and Mourinho’s failure as he states that he contacted his ex-boss to apologise.

"I sent him the message to say I was sorry he had gone and…well…just that I was sorry…I felt a little bit guilty because I’d been player of the year. I’d been one of the most decisive players, and this year I’d performed less well."

This statement can be taken as an admission to the guilt that Hazard felt at the time of Mourinho’s sacking. The general consensus, at least externally, was that the beloved tactician had been punished for the wrongdoings of those underneath him and such a sentiment still exists. These comments from the winger will do little but support the thoughts of those in Mourinho’s corner.

Hazard, despite his terrible displays, was largely spared the meaningful vitriol of the fans. After his scintillating 2014/15 campaign, supporters were willing to cut Hazard a bit of slack with explanations regarding burnout provided.

The Belgian still hasn’t found the form that he is capable of, but after some time out with injury, he appears to be back on the right path. He even finally broke his scoring duck last weekend against MK Dons.

Having said that, Guus Hiddink left him out of the starting line-up midweek as Chelsea limped to an uninspired goalless draw against Watford. Furthermore, the interim boss refused to bring Hazard on until less than twenty minutes remained.

Nevertheless, it is expected that the Belgian will be brought back into the team for Sunday’s massive meeting with Manchester United. The fixture may have lost some gloss given the clubs’ respective struggles, but a clash between these two is always huge.
