Chelsea FC are weighing up a move for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Blaise Matuidi, as they look to strengthen their squad for the next campaign.

The transfer window may be closed until the summer, but that hasn’t stop reporters across the footballing world from putting together stories regarding player movements. The latest claim is that Chelsea are seriously considering a bid for PSG’s Blaise Matuidi as they try to bring their flailing squad up to speed.

Matuidi has garnered quite a reputation under the stewardship of Laurent Blanc and now the Metro (citing French media outlet L’Equipe) report that the Blues will offer much money for his services.

"Chelsea are keen on a deal for Paris Saint Germain star Blaise Matuidi, according to reports. After selling Ramires to the Chinese Super League earlier this month, the Blues have cash and space in their squad for a new midfielder."

Ramires departed Chelsea in January after Jiangsu Suning came in with a lucrative and fairly ridiculous £25 million bid for the Brazilian. Evidently recognising that the Chinese club’s valuation was rather higher than their own, the Blues jumped at the opportunity to bag some surplus cash. For the player, he also accepted the opportunity to receive what is undoubtedly a massive payday out in the Far East.

With this windfall, Chelsea’s coffers are relatively well-endowed as they look to do all the work that should have been done last summer.

The Blues failed to bring in quality players after their double winning campaign last time out and their apparent reluctance has haunted them throughout this season. The incumbent players have found little inspiration with no new competition arriving to threaten their standing in the squad.

As a result, the first half of the campaign saw the previously exciting Blues turn it repeated listless performances. The players seemed directionless and dead, as if they were playing for nothing.

Much has been said about the catastrophic fall from grace and the lack of recruitment has taken a significant amount of blame. Chelsea will consequently be much more active this summer and this move for Matuidi may even be sealed before the window opens.

The 28-year-old was named the French Player of the Year for 2015 and has quickly developed into one of the world’s finest midfield reinforcers. Unfortunately, with his contract set to run through 2018, he certainly won’t be cheap. The money raised by the sale of Ramires will likely only be able to partly fund a successful bid.
