Chelsea FC captain John Terry was recognised with the Outstanding Contribution to London Football award last night as he reiterated his desire to stay with the Blues.

John Terry has achieved much over his long and storied career and his efforts were deservedly recognised last night at the London Football Awards. In an evening that celebrated the talent of the capital’s 15 professional football clubs, the Chelsea captain was bestowed with the Outstanding Contribution to London Football award.

Speaking to the Evening Standard after receiving the honour, Terry once again stated that he is eager to stay on at Stamford Bridge and that he still has a couple of seasons left in him.

"I’ve definitely got two or three years in me…Playing in Europe is an option. It is in Chelsea’s hands. I have made it clear to the club I want to stay."

More from The Pride of London

A Chelsea academy graduate, Terry has known no other club as a professional. He has embodied the Blues through their rise to the summit of world football and he has a trophy cabinet to reflect that. The defender has four Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups, one Europa League and a Champions League to his name. Any Chelsea team for the last decade or more has featured Terry as one of its supporting pillars.

However, the club captain seems to be on his way out of Stamford Bridge after he revealed that the brass will not be renewing his contract at this point in time. Naturally, this development has provoked fury amongst the supporters and for good reason too.

The Blues have lost a wealth of experience and leadership in Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Petr Cech in the last couple of years, leaving Terry as a one-man band. The lack of on-field leaders has been one of the reasons provided for Chelsea’s dismal start to the campaign. As a result, it beggars belief that the club are willing to push Terry out the door.

Terry is still holding out hope for a change in heart and thus fans should do so as well. The Englishman has not yet signed a pre-contract agreement with any other outfit as he remains focussed on the task at hand. The suggestion is that the board are waiting to confirm a new manager before extending Terry’s stay and thus there is a real possibility that he will be wearing Chelsea blue next season.

It’s hard to envisage a justification for not offering him a one-year deal and the incoming boss would be brave to enrage the fanbase upon his arrival by refusing to do so.
