Gary Cahill will be part of Roy Hodgson’s England squad as they travel to Germany on Saturday, before hosting the Netherlands on Tuesday evening. A few months ago, the defender may have feared that he would not even be considered for these friendlies, but now he is pushing for a starting spot at EURO 2016.

Cahill found himself on the fringe of the Blues first-team for much of this campaign, leaving the prospect of the England vice-captain not making the summer’s trip to France increasingly likely. However, unfortunate yet timely injuries to Kurt Zouma and John Terry opened the door.

As a result, Guus Hiddink reinstated him to the starting eleven and Cahill has since enjoyed an extended run in the squad. More importantly, he has shown that he still possesses enough quality to be a big-club centre back.

Having said that, competition for the starting berths at the EUROs will be fierce. Chris Smalling has been widely touted as a guaranteed name on the teamsheet, while John Stones (despite his recent form) is the fan-favourite to partner him. With Phil Jones slated to recover from injury in time, the Manchester United man could also be an option.

Evidently, Cahill needs an impressive couple of games in the next week to prove that he should be more than the experienced head in the dressing room. Given that England’s games are against some of Europe’s finest, impressive displays will be particularly noteworthy.
