Silly Season never sleeps! With Antonio Conte all but confirmed as Chelsea FC’s next manager, the parsing of former acolytes has commenced. Hi, Leonardo Bonucci.

With ‘Antonio Conte to Chelsea FC’ being a secret kept worse than if it were entrusted to a bored toddler, the current manager of Gli Azzurri is the starting point for most Blues-related rumors. Every Chelsea need — of which there are many (woof) — gets linked to a former Conte player, or one the boss has chased and/or admired in the past.

Since the average age of every player to spend time at centre back for Chelsea this season is 29.5 (woof, again), a dominant defender figures to be high on the shopping list. A couple of clicks later and well ‘Leonardo Bonucci to Chelsea?’ is a thing. So now, as microphones are thrust toward his lips, Bonucci gets the chance to either stoke the fire or pee it damp…

"The most I’ve followed him to is to get a coffee. I don’t know what the boss will do, but I’ve signed a renewal with Juventus and they are all I am thinking about."

…he chose the latter. Quite honestly this makes me like the idea of him joining Chelsea more. Faithful, stubbornly curt, and determined non-participant in the media carnival. Dreams of him flinging his blue-shirt adorned torso in front of a shot are starting to gain weight.

And if a man knows his way to a good coffee, you follow him, because his depth of knowledge likely permeates other areas of useful importance. Bonucci touched on that, too.

More from The Pride of London

"He’s the coach who took me onto the next level, right from the day he arrived at Juve, we had a few disagreements at the very start. Partly because I wasn’t in good shape, but he taught me a lot on a tactical level. If I am one of the best today, part of that is down to him."

In the comments (all taken from the Daily Mail), Leonardo went on to mention that he wasn’t in good shape due to his recent wedding and honeymoon. Which is understandable. Given that as the starting point of their relationship, it says good things about both that they worked together to get the big defender where he is now. Clearly a mutually beneficial association was forged. In terms of recruitment, that isn’t a bad memory to dangle.

Still, Bonucci is 28 and quite used to both winning and Champions League football. Unfortunately, replicating one of those will be a massive storyline and question heading into next season, and the other impossible.

But see, this is why Silly Season exists. For a second there even I started to peel back the layers to find a convincing fit. Point is, Bonucci is a terrific player who will have plenty of options, including the option to do nothing, which could easily prove to be his best one.
