John Terry and Guus Hiddink are on their way out, Antonio Conte is on his way in and the locker room is in disarray. Which Chelsea FC player could emerge as captain?

Chelsea FC’s incoming manager has three options to address the team’s deficiencies in player leadership: let John Terry finish his career at Chelsea, buy an experienced player that can assume the role or promote from within.

We know Terry would like nothing more than to retire as a Blue, and retaining him would go a long way to providing some stability to the club in what will surely be an active transfer window. If Conte goes shopping for a captain, he’s going to need someone capable of immediately taking control of a locker room in disarray and transition, and who is willing to work under a manager who has no problem publicly cursing out his captains. Conte’s third possibility is to mold a current Blue into the on-field and training room leader.

Unfortunately, we wouldn’t be talking about this if anyone on the roster was ready and willing to step into that role. Even so, an infusion of confidence often goes hand-in-hand with being awarded responsibility, so here are five current Blues that may be ready to wear the armband next season.
