3. Cesar Azpilicueta

Azpilicueta is one of those players that you only really notice when he does something wrong. Which means you don’t notice Azpi all that much. The Spaniard is the perennial Unsung Hero of West London. In years past one could easily forget he was there because he did his job so clinically, so cleanly and so consistently that it often seemed like nothing much ever happened on the left side of Chelsea’s half.

Azpilicueta hasn’t been quite at that level this season, in large part because opposing offences have so thoroughly shredded Chelsea’s midfield and defence that he hasn’t had many opportunities to win the one-on-one battles where he thrives. He has a quiet, steady demeanor to go with his work ethic, but he doesn’t seem to have the inclination to take a teammate (or the entire team) by the horns and direct a match.

Still, he is a fan favorite and has already committed himself to the team under Antonio Conte, whose tactical formations could deliver attacking forwards right into Azpil’s shutdown zone. If anyone could quietly emerge from the shadows to take charge of the team, it’s Dave.
