Former Chelsea FC flop and/or legend Fernando Torres scored again this evening as Atletico Madrid continued their push for the La Liga title.

With Chelsea FC providing little to cheer about, we may as well celebrate the achievements of anyone vaguely related to the club. The youngsters showed that they were up to the task by winning the UEFA Youth League earlier this week (full recap here) but a veteran in Fernando Torres is also showing that he still has it. Whatever ‘it’ is.

As Atletico Madrid push for a Champions League and La Liga double, the former Blues striker has come alive in recent weeks. He scored another goal earlier this evening as Diego Simeone’s men squeezed past Athletic Bilbao 1-0. Check it out:

Torres had an eventful time at Stamford Bridge. After arriving for £50 million he was, well, kind of sh*te. However, even though his goal tally may have been minimal, it did include some memorable strikes. After all, who can forget his effort against Barcelona and Gary Neville’s orgasmic scream?

You know, that one.

EUUUUUEEUUUUUUHUOOOOOOHHHHHH.

Or something.

Shut up Aj.

Anyway, Torres has now hit the back of the net in the last five Atletico games. In fact, he has scored eight goals in his last 13 matches.

The veteran has been thrust into a regular starting role after the club shipped Jackson Martinez off to China during the winter transfer window. The Colombian had struggled to settle into Simeone’s style and thus Atleti were happy to take the ludicrous offer that came in from the Far East.

Torres has almost been reborn (minus all the grim bits) since the development and he is proving pivotal in Atletico’s campaign. Antoine Griezmann may be taking all the plaudits, but his ageing strike partner is certainly doing his bit.

Doubts were hanging over his Atletico future last summer, but he has now pressed his case for retention next season. Given that Chelsea aren’t giving us much to shout about, we can cheer this instead. AMIRITE?
