As this dire season winds down, Cesc Fabregas is one player who still has something to prove while he auditions for the Chelsea FC captaincy under Antonio Conte.

Chelsea FC, as a team, have nothing to play for as this 2015/16 Premier League campaign comes to its end. In fact, they have had very little at stake for close to half the campaign. However, with Antonio Conte taking the reins over the summer, some individuals certainly do.

Given the dire performances that Blues fans have been forced to repeatedly sit through, many players are playing for their futures at Stamford Bridge. Others are hoping to make a claim for the Chelsea club captaincy, which is set to be left vacant with John Terry leaving this summer. Cesc Fabregas is one of the individuals in the latter group.

The Spaniard has by no means been impressive this season. At Christmas, many were calling for him to be the principal departure come the end of the campaign. Fortunately, Fabregas has found form in recent months and has consequently reminded everyone of the quality that he still possesses.

Of course, he is still liable to not turning up (he is certainly no Frank Lampard) but the midfielder is putting in displays that are probably the best that we have seen since his West London arrival.

With his vast experience and extensive trophy cabinet, Fabregas is one of the few players on the current roster who can legitimately claim to be of captaincy material.

Gary Cahill is his closest contender with the defensive veteran the favourite to take the armband at the moment. Branislav Ivanovic is the co-captain and thus could see himself promoted but with transfer rumours swirling, the Serbian may not even be here next season.

His fellow countryman in Nemanja Matic is another individual who could be a candidate. However, the midfielder needs to focus on getting his career back on track instead of being burdened with extra duties that club captaincy brings.

Fabregas was magisterial in his last performance, controlling the game against Bournemouth and picking up three assists for his troubles. His form since the turn of the year has been impressive enough to turn some of the fans as well. Many, admittedly not all, of those previously calling for his sale are now looking forward to what he can bring to the new Blues era.

With a few games left in the season, the midfielder will be aiming to replicate last weekend’s stellar show. The control that he displayed was what has been missing from the team all season long. The defence has been an absolute shambles, but the presence of puppeteer in the middle of the park can help negate that.

Fabregas is unlikely to match the spectacular levels that he reached during his Arsenal and Barcelona days, but he could compensate for that by adding consistency to his game.

Should be able to reduce the volatitly and variance in his performances, then the Spaniard could easily see himself succeeding John Terry as Chelsea FC captain next season.
