4. Begovic struggles

With a season as disappointing as the one Chelsea find themselves in, there has to be something to keep the fans, especially the more neutral ones, interested. This year the rumor mill has been churning as hard as it ever has in quite a few years for Chelsea, particularly after the dismissal of former manager Jose Mourinho.

One of the big topics has been Thibaut Courtois’ rumored move away from Stamford Bridge, potentially to Real Madrid. Coincidentally, Asmir Begovic has been given the opportunity to impress in the final run of games, with Courtois taking a back seat to the action.

Begovic has mostly been steady in his appearances, but didn’t look very confident at all in today’s match. Particularly on set pieces, the goalkeeper tried to parry the ball away multiple times, but failed to get much power or direction on his clearances. This created moments were the Liverpool attack was allowed to continue, simply because of a botched clearance.

The Blues were made to pay for Begovic’s inconsistency in second half stoppage time, when the keeper was unable to get his hands on a whipped-in cross, gifting substitute Christian Benteke an open goal to shoot at.
