Chelsea FC loanee Papy Djilobodji took up the role of superhero this afternoon as he saved Werder Bremen from the threat of relegation with a late goal.

Papy Djilobodji was a bizarre signing last summer. No-one knew who he was and yet he was drafted in for first-team cover as Chelsea FC embarked on their defence of the Premier League title. He was swiftly shipped off to Werder Bremen in January and he spared them relegation on Saturday afternoon.

Seriously, he did.

Bremen were drawing with Eintracht Frankfurt before Djilobodji hit the back of the net in the 88th minute. As a result, they were saved from a relegation play-off and will play in the Bundesliga next season.

Djilobodji did not make a single appearance for Chelsea during his short initial stay. The Senegal international came over from France in a shocking move that cost the club under £5 million.

Jose Mourinho had no intention of using him and successor Guus Hiddink viewed Djilobodji’s talent with similar disdain. Werder Bremen came in with a loan offer during the winter transfer window and he was duly sent away.

The Bundesliga outfit have been struggling all season long but they have managed to fight on. While Chelsea have had their own problems, Blues fans may be tempted to share in some of Bremen’s celebrations. After all, it was a blue who made it happen.

It will be interesting to see how Djilobodji’s situation develops over the summer. With Antonio Conte coming in, very few people have mentioned the centre-back’s name in conversations regarding the future of the club.
