John Terry has provided hope that he will be staying with Chelsea FC after he cancelled what was scheduled to be a farewell match at Stamford Bridge.

Having been suspended for Chelsea FC’s season finale against Leicester City, John Terry organised a private farewell match in order to bid goodbye to Stamford Bridge. However, he cancelled the event, giving hope that he will be staying at the club.

According to The Telegraph, ongoing talks between the club captain and Blues brass was the reason for the change of plans.

"Terry will have more talks with Chelsea over his future and decided against going ahead with a game he had organised for himself and close friends at Stamford Bridge."

After picking up a red card in the dying moments of Chelsea’s contest with Sunderland, it seemed as though Terry had played his last game for the club. However, it was revealed that the Blues had tendered an extension to the defender in the final week of the campaign, albeit for a ‘different role’.

It remains to be seen what this role is, but it is certainly testing Terry’s loyalty. He has repeatedly stated his desire to end his career at Stamford Bridge, a sentiment which he once again expressed after the Leicester game. The news of this cancellation shows that he is hopeful of a breakthrough.

Most fans recognise that Terry is unlikely to be a important player under new boss Antonio Conte. The value that he can bring in a leadership capacity, though, is the key driver behind retaining him. With several young players rising through the ranks and a manager who has never worked in the Premier League incoming, Terry’s experience will come in handy.

The defender reportedly has mega offers on the table from clubs in the Chinese Super League. Given that he believes another year or two of football is left in him, he may be tempted to take them up.

Then again, his love for Chelsea is strong enough that a reduced capacity will be good enough for him to stay.
