One of football’s worst kept secrets was revealed this morning when former Chelsea FC boss Jose Mourinho was confirmed as Manchester United’s new manager.

One of Chelsea fans’ worst fears was realised this morning when Jose Mourinho was finally unveiled as the new Manchester United manager. The news has been coming for some time, but the actual confirmation is sure to grate those West Londoners who worship him.

In a (somewhat) interesting development, Mourinho also joined Instagram to announce the move.

Louis Van Gaal was sacked as United boss just a few days after leading them to their first trophy since Sir Alex Ferguson departed. However, this decision was largely supported by United fans who had witnessed their team play some of the worst football seen at Old Trafford for 20 years.

Mourinho was always going to be the man to relieve the Dutchman and it is now official. When the Portuguese tactician was sacked by Roman Abramovich in December, it divided Blues fans. Some agreed that he had to go, but the bulk claimed that he was being let down by the players.

Furthermore, one of the most concerning consequences of his dismissal would be Mourinho taking over Manchester United. With the Special One at the helm, the Red Devils are almost guaranteed to be serious contenders in all competitions next season.

More from The Pride of London

Mourinho will be without Champions League football, but this will only force him to concentrate on the Premier League, a frightening prospect for his competitors.

After a sublime and unpredictable 2015/16 campaign that saw Leicester City romp to the title and new teams force their way into the mix, 2016/17 is shaping up to be even better. England’s top flight will see Jurgen Klopp, Antonio Conte, Pep Guardiola and Mourinho battle it out with Claudio Ranieri, Mauricio Pochettino and Slaven Bilic on the sidelines.

Speaking to United’s website, Mourinho expressed his excitement at taking up the one role he has always seemed to want.

"To become Manchester United manager is a special honour in the game. It is a club known and admired throughout the world. There is a mystique and a romance about it which no other club can match.I have always felt an affinity with Old Trafford; it has hosted some important memories for me in my career and I have always enjoyed a rapport with the United fans. I’m looking forward to being their manager and enjoying their magnificent support in the coming years."

No matter how the final four months of his Chelsea days went, this is awful news for the rest of the league. With the wealth of talent that United already have and the endless pockets of their owners, they are truly back on their road to the top.
