Chelsea at Euro 2016: players, manager and transfer targets

Cesc Fabregas
It has been some rollercoaster of a ride for Cesc Fabregas over the last two years. Having joined Chelsea, he was magisterial for most of the club’s double-winning 2014/15 campaign. He tailed off towards the end, but this was largely attributed to the fact that Chelsea were cruising.
Unfortunately, he did not quite pick himself up at the start of the next season. His awful performances were key in the Blues’ descent to mediocrity and Jose Mourinho‘s eventual dismissal.
Then, as Chelsea’s position in mid-table became assured, he turned on the style again, ending the season on a high. Many people have questioned the validity of his performances given that Chelsea had nothing to play for. He will want to prove his worth in France.
Similarly with Azpilicueta, Fabregas is by no means a certain starter. Spain’s abundance of quality players means that he will need to grab any chance he gets. However, with all the criticism that has been levelled at him recently, he should be eager to do so.
His veteran status may give him the edge over his younger teammates, especially with the cautious nature that often accompanies the first round of an international tournament. Fabregas must pull the strings in order to keep his place going into the knockout stages.
