Chelsea great Frank Lampard was on the wrong end of a lecture from David Villa after New York City FC squeezed past Philadelphia 3-2 in MLS.
Frank Lampard opened his 2016 MLS account this past weekend. Starting for New York City FC against Philadelphia Union, the Chelsea legend hit the back of the net en route to a 3-2 victory. However, the goal was not enough for David Villa, who gave his teammate an earful after the final whistle.
Lampard went up to celebrate a hard-fought three points with the former Barcelona striker, but he was only subjected to a tirade.
NYCFC fans have had a strained relationship with the Englishman since he left Chelsea for their shores two years ago. Lampard was first shipped off on loan to Manchester City, a stay which was extended to result in him missing the start of the 2015 campaign.
He has then suffered multiple injuries, restricting the amount of playing time he has enjoyed. Fans have called into question his commitment, with his on-field performances not reflecting his level of talent.
Fellow midfield great Andrea Pirlo has come under similar criticism, but both of them registered on the scoresheet. Hopefully, they will be able to kick on from here.
Frank Lampard was only making his fourth appearance in this campaign but Villa was not going to allow him to celebrate a tight win.
The ex-Chelsea man was also booed by the NYCFC fans a few weeks ago when he entered the derby against New York Red Bulls. In a game that the home side would eventually lose 7-0, the locals expressed their feelings regarding Lampard’s contributions to the cause thus far.

The Englishman would have viewed this MLS move as a cosy retirement job, but the initial adoration has waned quickly. It will be interesting to see if Lampard’s US adventure is cut short at the end of the season.
