Chelsea FC’s 5 greatest upsets of all time
By George Perry
England’s Round of 16 loss to Iceland at Euro 2016 was one of the greatest upsets in world football. Chelsea FC’s Gary Cahill played all 90 minutes for England, and would have preferred to not have been a part of this particular episode in football history.
For much of Chelsea FC’s history – and yes, contrary to what you may hear elsewhere, Chelsea does have a long history – the Blues were the underdog. Even after Jose Mourinho filled up the trophy case at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea would still enter matches – particularly in Europe – favored to lose.
The upside of being the underdog for so long is that most upsets in Chelsea’s history were in the Blues’ favor. Time and again, the lads surprised the Stamford Bridge faithful with an unexpected win and some new hardware. Unfortunately, as the team’s legacy grew, the Blues occasionally played the goat.
So while most of these games will make you want to break out in song, be warned that there are some painful memories in here.
