Chelsea announced this morning that all three of Alexandre Pato, Radamel Falcao and Marco Amelia will be leaving the club after the expiration of their contracts.

This was only a matter of time. Chelsea confirmed on Friday morning that three perennial players would be leaving the club. Radamel Falcao, Alexandre Pato and Marco Amelia will not be a part of Antonio Conte’s plans for next season.

As announced on the club’s official website, the trio will not have their stays extended with their contracts running out this summer.

"With contracts having come to an end, we today say farewell to three players who were part of the squad during last season – Falcao, Pato and Marco Amelia…Chelsea Football Club thanks the players for their contributions and wishes them success in the future."

All three players arrived at Stamford Bridge at some point last season and frankly they could not have pitched up at a worse time.

The club endured a horrific 2015/16 campaign which saw them make the worst defence of a title in Premier League history. The team looked devoid of life and spirit, with consistently poor performances frustrating the fans as well.

Radamel Falcao was signed at the start of the season in a Jose Mourinho gamble. The Colombian suffered a terrible twelve months with Manchester United, but the Special One felt that he could turn the fallen star’s fortunes around.

It didn’t happen.

Alexandre Pato, meanwhile, was brought in during the winter transfer window. With injuries hitting the Blues squad, it was hoped that he may provide the miracle to spark the side.

This, too, did not happen.

In fact, given that the South American footballing world was in the midst of their offseason, Pato came over far from match fit. As a result, it took him a month before he was able to be named on the substitutes bench.

Eventually, the Brazilian did score one goal (from the penalty spot) in his two club appearances.

With Chelsea in need of a third goalkeeper, former AC Milan man Marco Amelia was drafted in. He knew what his role would entail and thus is probably not surprised that he failed to get on the pitch.

With this announcement, Antonio Conte is starting to shape his squad. The arrival of Michy Batshuayi is imminent and the Blues are expected to make a few more moves before August. Are you excited for the new season yet?
