The latest transfer rumour concerning Chelsea sees them rejecting an offer from Borussia Monchengladbach for Andreas Christensen. Amen.

All the talk currently surrounding Chelsea is about which superstar will be next to join Antonio Conte’s project (or Diego Costa’s potential departure). However, another story has surfaced that will boost fans’ confidence in the club. The Blues have reportedly rejected a bid from Borussia Monchengladbach for Andreas Christensen.

Sky Sports, via their partners in Germany, claim that the defender has been subject to an offer worth almost £15 million. Chelsea, though, have rebuffed it.

"Borussia Monchengladbach have had a £14.25m bid for Andreas Christensen rejected by Chelsea, according to Sky in Germany…No further talks between the clubs over a permanent move are expected until the winter."

More from The Pride of London

This is great news given the calibre of player involved. Andreas Christensen was sent on a two-season loan to the Bundesliga last summer and he excelled during the first half of the stint. The Dane made nearly 40 competitive appearances for Gladbach, quickly establishing himself as a rock in defence.

His efforts helped the German outfit qualify for the Champions League play-off round as they finished fourth in the Bundesliga.

Christensen’s performances led to rumours that Chelsea were keen on paying Gladbach to cut short his loan spell. Conversely, there were talks of Gladbach making a concerted effort to secure the youngster permanently.

The latter has materialised and Chelsea have rejected the offer.

This news will please Blues fans who feared attitudes were not changing. Previously, Chelsea would have likely taken the fairly lucrative sum of money. Instead of keeping Christensen to graduate to the first-team, they would have bought an established star instead.

However, this indicates that Antonio Conte sees the youngster as a part of his plans moving forward. At the tender age of 20, there is no reason to believe that he cannot be hugely successful at Stamford Bridge.

Of course, the caveat comes in the latter part of the above quote. Chelsea may feel that they can hold out for even more money and hence have turned down the bid. The irritating aspect of this thought is that it is completely feasible.

This may not be a change in attitude, but a mere confirmation of the previous approach.

Having said that, Conte has brought optimism to the club and that will be extended to this development. Andreas Christensen will hopefully kick on this season, readying himself to slot right into Chelsea’s defensive heart come the 2017/18 campaign.
