Chelsea fullback Branislav Ivanovic has suffered an injury that could force him to miss the start of the season. Fans will be hoping that his replacements step up to the plate.

Antonio Conte has been dealt a blow as he prepares for his first season at the helm of Chelsea after Branislav Ivanovic suffered an injury. With the senior defender set to be sidelined for a few weeks, the youngsters in the squad must seize the opportunity presented to them.

According to the Daily Mail, Ivanovic dislocated his shoulder during Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over RZ Pellets. He is expected to be out for around three weeks.

"Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic is facing three weeks out with a dislocated shoulder…[It] will see him touch and go for the Blues’ first Premier League game with London rivals West Ham on August 15."

While no-one should ever wish harm or injury on fellow human beings, Chelsea fans will be somewhat pleased with the news. Branislav Ivanovic was appalling last season, confirming sentiments that he can no longer play at the highest level. This injury opens up an opportunity for backup players to stake their claims to be a starting fullback.

Ola Aina has enjoyed some game time during Chelsea’s first two pre-season games. The exciting talent will be the person who Blues fans want to capitalise on the situation. With the club’s consistent failures to effectively promote academy talent, Aina could represent a change in attitude.

Antonio Conte appears keen to make use of the club’s great youth set up and Aina could cement his first-team status in the coming weeks. Ivanovic will certainly miss high-profile friendlies against Liverpool and Real Madrid. Aina must show Conte that he is a match for the Serbian in the slot.

The same applies to Kenedy. The winger has displayed promise in a wing-back role and with Conte open to using a variety of tactics, the Brazilian must also prove his worth. Early indications are that the full-backs will be required to attack as much as they defend. Kenedy, with his pace and skill, could be a perfect fit for the role.

Baba Rahman, meanwhile, will be looking for a measure of redemption. The Ghanaian has failed to significantly impress since his surprising Stamford Bridge switch last summer. Given that Chelsea suffered a disastrous season, it was not the best of times to debut in the Premier League. Hence, he should definitely be afforded a clean slate.
