Bristol Rovers seal Chelsea tie with incredible strike (WATCH)
After a lot of confusion and few people knowing what’s going on, Chelsea will take on Bristol Rovers in their opening EFL Cup game.
It’s been a summer of change in English football. The Premier League has a new logo, while the Football League has been rebranded as the English Football League. With that the League Cup is now known as the EFL Cup. It’s caused some confusion, but one thing for certain is that Chelsea will take on Bristol Rovers in the second round.
The initial draw saw Chelsea matched up with either Bristol Rovers, or neighbours Bristol City. However, Rovers were due to take on Cardiff City.
Huh?
Well, it was something to do with seedings as the draw was based on it.
Anyway, Rovers defeated the Welsh team 1-0 last night in spectacualr fashion. The stalemate was broken in the 115th minute with a sweet strike from Chris Lines.
It was an upset that saw League One Rovers dump Championship Cardiff out of the cup. Now, their eyes will be firmly on another giant-killing at Stamford Bridge.
Given that the Blues finished outside the European places, Antonio Conte’s men will have to play one more game than usual in their bid for silverware. Those teams in the Champions League and Europa League enter the competition in the next round.
In truth, Chelsea should see this game off with ease, but after the events of last season, no fan can be sure.
The game will indeed be in West London and is due to be played during the week commencing 22nd August.
Other notable ties include Burton Albion hosting Liverpool (last year’s runners-up) and Everton welcoming Yeovil Town.
