Eden Hazard has been a source of excitement and frustration for Chelsea fans. Blues great Kerry Dixon discussed the Belgian’s inconsistency recently.

When Eden Hazard first arrived at Stamford Bridge, there was a buzz surrounding the talented Belgium. By the end of Chelsea’s 2014/15 season, many (including Jose Mourinho) were putting the Belgian on the same level as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

However, the 2015/16 campaign saw Hazard crash down to Earth as those compliments were slowly retracted. Speaking at the launch of his new book, Up Front, Chelsea great Kerry Dixon discussed his fellow forward.

"He is capable of being one of the best in the world, but it is up to him to be the best in the world. You can say you don’t like the manager, or the club or this or that. Sometimes people don’t fulfil their potential and get to where they should be for various reasons which can be the manager or the club, but the biggest reason is themselves. – via Goal"

Dixon is saying nothing but the truth here. Chelsea may have been absolutely woeful last season, but that was just a minor factor in Hazard’s disappointing performances.

The winger looked lost and completely detached from matters on the field. One of the main points of frustration was an unforgivable lack of effort from Hazard (and his colleagues).

This season has seen Hazard re-energised and refocused on what he does best: terrorising opposition defences. This return to form only reinforces Dixon’s statement. It is down to Hazard himself to fulfill his potential.

When you are young and coming through the ranks, a myriad of factors that can throw you off the path you should be on. Once on the big stage, it is up to the player to take his development into his own hands.

Hazard’s biggest enemy is indeed himself.

The good news is that he does appear to be back on track. Whether it was the change of manager, or a conscious effort to move on from a disastrous 12 months, Hazard is enjoying his profession again.

Whether he kicks on after a promising start is still a cause for concern. When the games start to come faster and the results turn for the worse, will Hazard step up to the plate? Chelsea have already endured a blip, but the optimism from Antonio Conte’s arrival has carried the club through. It is the losses in January that will heap genuine pressure on the team.

That’s when we will discover whether Hazard is truly back on course.
