Roman Abramovich is reportedly ready to fund Antonio Conte’s desire to bring Leonardo Bonucci to Chelsea. It’s a much-needed move for the Blues.

The summer transfer window may be shut, but the winter window is just around the corner. With the mix of an international break and a semi-crisis at Chelsea, journalists are taking the opportunity to devise juicy transfer rumours. The latest involves Leonardo Bonucci and Blues owner Roman Abramovich.

The Telegraph reports that the billionaire is willing to bankroll a mega move for the defender. Antonio Conte is thought to be keen on some defensive reinforcements having now realised the extent of Chelsea’s troubles at the back.

"Bonucci, the Juventus centre-back, would be Conte’s dream signing and Abramovich is prepared to try to make a transfer happen by bidding more than the £50 million Paris Saint-Germain paid the club for David Luiz, which is still a world record for a defender."

While Conte has brought a renewed energy and vigour to Stamford Bridge, some of the problems from last season are still there to see. The defence was appalling last time out and not much has changed. Conte was even forced into a premature switch to the destined three-man backline, having seen how poorly the team coped in a four-man set-up.

Chelsea’s need for some fresh defenders was evident coming out that last disastrous campaign. However, Michael Emenalo and his colleagues continued to fumble on the matter, relying on a deadline day double to save partial face.

In truth, the acquisitions of David Luiz and Marcos Alonso are little to shout about for a team wanting to challenge for the Premier League.

The addition of Leonardo Bonucci would be significant. The defender has played under Antonio Conte both at Juventus and with Italy; the duo have a strong positive relationship.

Bonucci would immediately fit into the first-team upon his arrival. Furthermore, he would allow Conte to be more relaxed about a three-man defence. The Italian has played in such a system and should theoretically slot in seamlessly.

The combination of Bonucci’s experience and the fact that he can still play at the highest level is unique. He will be able to replace Gary Cahill’s seniority on the field, while meeting the standards required of a Premier League defender.

In short, this is a transfer that Chelsea should make at almost any cost. Roman Abramovich is willing to open his wallet, so the Blues must take advantage.
